My current Toolbox:
Nikon D80 Camera Body
50MM F/1.8D AF Nikkor
As a comparison, here's a toolbox by Mike Colon, a legendary Nikonnite:
Nikon D3 Camera Body
200MM F/2G ED-IF AF-S VR Nikkor
70-200MM F/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor
105MM F/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro Nikkor
85MM F/1.4D AF Nikkor
50MM F/1.4D AF Nikkor
24-70MM F/2.8D ED-IF AF-S Zoom Nikkor
14-24MM F/2.8G ED-IF AF-S Zoom Nikkor
Just to give a basic idea, the bottom two lenses mentioned above (24-70MM, 14-24MM) cost somewhere around $1700 total.
Given that my budget for the next lens is around 300 dollars, I am looking at the following:
- Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor ($329)
- Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor ($349)
Possible Cheaper Alternatives:
- Zoom Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G ($134)
- Wide Angle AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D ($235)
*Note that these are prices listed on B&H Photo & Video webiste.
**This is certainly a very expensive hobby...

i'm jealous of the d80's built-in wireless flash commander capability. i never knew that the whole time i had that camera. -.- i say an external flash should be on your wishlist.
with good eyes + skills you can do stuff like Mike Colon with sub-$500 lenses~ =P but i encourage you NOT to get the 70-300G.
can i take the credit for starting this camera frenzy at RBC? or should i say, Nikon frenzy? my next task is to convert ya'll to Cano.. er.. that "C" word
it's strangely comforting to hear you guys talk so passionately about cameras. i want to add my 2 cents about lenses. if you google "zoom vs prime", the articles might convert you over to prime lenses. oh, young got his d80.
here's a second 'no' vote for 70-300mm. No.
i'm still saving $ for a 80-200mm f2.4...
ack! it's so hard to read your blog! actually, your's, josh's, and jonathan's are all hard to read.. you get that "shadow" effect after staring for a while..
Hmm... Shadow effect... that's not good... didn't mean to make it hard to read... i guess, white background with black letters... are the easiest to read!! :=)
what is shadow effect?
correction on your poll on camera make: Konica Minolta completely sold its (SLR) camera division to Sony~ (the roots of Sony's alpha system)
